Teddy bears and baby dolls have been cherished and wanted by all ages from infants to adults for years. From birth, stuffed bears and soft dolls decorate rooms and fill cribs. As babies grow into toddlers, bears and dolls become best friends and playmates. Even in grade school girls and boys play with action dolls and fashion dolls. Once teen and adult years come, bears and dolls are given for decorative and collectable purposes.

Teddy bears have been around since the early 1900’s. They were called “teddy” bears after the U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was “teddy, after he refused to shoot a tied up black bear on accounts that it was bad sportsmanship. Since then teddy bears have remained popular throughout the U.S.

Teddy bears come in thousands of variations. They are available in tiny, one-inch sizes and larger-than-life sizes, dwarfing most adults. They are commonly used as gifts for celebrating particular holidays or events. For example, Christmas bears wear red and green hats and scarves, graduation bears have a cap and gown and graduation tassel, and Valentines bears have hearts and kisses and often come with real Valentines candy. Even wedding bears are made, with a groom bear in a tux and bride groom in a pretty white dress with a veil.

A newer trend in teddy bear gift giving is the “do-it-yourself” type of teddy bear making. Companies such as Build-a-bear and Vermont Teddy supply different types of bears, which you can fill with however much stuffing you wish, then you can pick from a huge assortment of outfits and accessories to dress the bear in. With this type of teddy bear creating, you can literally design a bear to perfectly fit any person or occasion.

Other popular stuffed bears include celebrity bears, such as Winnie the Pooh, Corduroy and the Care Bears.

The history of baby dolls goes back much further than teddy bears. Archeologists have found dolls in Egyptian tombs, which date back to as early as 2000 B.C.  Early dolls were made of materials such as wood, clay, stone, or paper.  Now dolls can be made from cloth, porcelain, china, rubber, plastic, etc. Although modern technology has given many baby dolls real-life effects not available thousands of years ago, many of the modern dolls serve the same purposes as they have for thousands and thousands of years.

Fragile dolls, like porcelain and china dolls are popular collectables, along with antique dolls from the early 1800 and 1900’s. Marionette dolls, foreign dolls and other unique types of dolls are also commonly collected.

Baby dolls and fashion dolls, though more technically advanced, still serve the purpose of entertaining young children. Baby dolls now days can be filled with materials that give the baby a more life-like feeling. They also do things such as cry and talk and even require a diaper change, making little girls feel like real mothers. Fashion dolls now have many different trendy outfits and accessories to fit the modern age.
