Fashion Dolls
Fashion dolls are designed primarily to reflect different
fashion trends. In fact, many of the first commercially produced dolls
were ornately costumed according to local styles and given as gifts.
This occurred during the fifteenth century in such countries as Germany,
Italy, Holland, France, and England.
Today, fashion dolls may be designed as playthings or as collectibles.
They were originally created from such things as wax, wood, clay, and
rags. Plastic and vinyl are more common manufacturing materials today.
Among the most popular and influential fashion dolls is Mattel's Barbie.
Gene Marshall and Tyler Wentworth are other popular versions. These
latter two had more popularity with adult collectors, however.
