Stuffed Teddy Bears
Stuffed teddy bears became popular in the early 1900s.
Their popularity arose from cartoon depictions of President Theodore
showing compassion for a bear cub. This was based on a true event wherein
the U.S. president refused to kill a bear caught for him by some people
with whom he was hunting.
This led to the initial craze for stuffed teddy bears. However, interest
in the products began to dwindle at the start of World War II. This
was understandable as industrial resources were demanded elsewhere.
In more recent times, stuffed teddy bears have experienced a comeback.
This began with the 1969 book Bear with Me (later retitled The Teddy
Bear Book.) It created a ripe atmosphere for resurged interest in this
traditional toy.
