Talking Dolls

Talking dolls have been of great interest to toymakers for many years. Speech capabilities offer significant success when it comes to creating a more realistic doll. It works not only toward a more realistic design, but also a more interactive one.

The first talking dolls are known as mama criers. These began surfacing in the 1800s. They utilized weighted mechanisms or bellows to create a single, simple sound.

More advanced talking dolls arose in France through the use of phonographs. Unfortunately, these were very expensive to produce. For this reason, not many were made. The next steps were the use of record cylinders, followed by pull strings.
